What grade level if using in the summer?

Choosing the Right Grade Level:

  • When selecting the correct grade level for your student to practice reading comprehension in the summer, consider their performance during the past or current school year.
  • If your child struggles in reading, I strongly recommend choosing the grade level they are currently in. For example, if your child is just finishing up fourth grade and will be going to fifth grade next year, opt for the fourth-grade reading comprehension workbook.
  • This choice ensures they have a strong foundation and are fully prepared to tackle the challenges of the upcoming grade.

Foundation for Success:

  • By using the workbook at their current grade level, your child can reinforce essential skills and bridge any gaps in comprehension.
  • This approach prepares them to start the new school year with confidence and a solid understanding of grade-level reading expectations.

Advancing Ahead:

  • Alternatively, if your child excelled in reading and felt confident in their abilities during the past year, consider selecting the workbook for the next grade level.
  • For instance, if your child performed well in fourth grade, you may want to choose the fifth-grade workbook to provide them with a head start.
  • This strategy allows them to begin the new school year already reading at or above grade level, setting them up for success from the start.

Which grade level does my child need?

Understanding Reading Levels for Your Child

When it comes to finding the right reading level for your child, there are several methods commonly used by educators. Understanding these systems can help you select appropriate reading materials and support your child's literacy development.

1. Lexile Framework for Reading:

The Lexile Framework is a widely used system that measures a reader's ability and the complexity of texts on the same scale. If your child is reading on grade level, their Lexile range will typically fall within the range shown in the chart below. Lexile measures are expressed as numeric scores, with higher numbers indicating higher reading levels.

2. ATOS Level System:

The ATOS level system is another method used to assess text complexity and reader proficiency. ATOS levels are typically aligned with grade levels, making it easier to match books to a child's reading abilities. For example, a book with an ATOS level of 5.0 would be appropriate for a fifth-grade reader.

Similar to Lexile measures, ATOS levels provide a quantitative way to gauge reading proficiency.

Each grade level in the Reading Comprehension Workbooks was written to ensuring that the content is developmentally appropriate for children at that stage.

When purchasing a workbook, rest assured that all passages within the book will be written within that grade level's reading range.

How do I know my child’s reading level?

Your child's reading level is typically assessed at school, and many use standardized tests to determine Lexile or ATOS levels. Reach out to your child's school to obtain their Lexile reading level, which can help you select reading materials that align with their abilities.

If you're not sure what level your child is reading at, don't worry! One easy way to figure out your child's reading level is by visiting the library. Grab a few books written for the grade your child is currently in or will be in soon. When you read together, try the "five finger method." If there are more than five words on a page that your child can't read or understand, the book might be too hard for them. It's not perfect, but it can help you see if your child needs simpler or more challenging books.
