Writing strong responses is a skill—and first graders need to be taught how to do it one step at a time.
Your child may be asked to answer questions about what they read, write in complete sentences, and use evidence from a text—but knowing the answer and knowing how to put that answer into writing are two very different skills.
This 1st Grade Writing Workbook is being designed to teach those skills through short, highly guided practice that gradually builds independence.

This won’t simply be a book of writing prompts.
Instead of expecting first graders to write a complete response right away, the workbook will break the process into smaller skills and build them gradually.
Your child will practice skills such as:
✔️ Using words from the question to start an answer
✔️ Answering questions in complete sentences
✔️ Restating and answering a question
✔️ Finding evidence in a text
✔️ Using text evidence to support an answer
✔️ Putting the pieces together into a stronger written response
The support will gradually decrease as your child becomes more comfortable with the process.

First-grade writing practice should look different from writing practice for older students.
That’s why this workbook is being designed with simple directions, visual anchor charts, short reading passages, sentence support, and guided practice before students are expected to write more independently.
Activities will include a mix of writing and other ways to practice the skill, so beginning writers aren’t expected to write a full response on every page.

How do I print the workbook?
Download the PDF and print the workbook at home or at a local print shop. For best results, print single-sided.
Answer keys are included through convenient QR codes, so there's no need to print extra pages. Simply keep your phone, tablet, or computer nearby and scan the QR code whenever you'd like to check answers.
Then complete about 4 tasks per week (10–15 minutes a day) and watch your child's confidence grow!
Can I use with workbook digitally?
Yes! While the workbook was designed to be printed and completed with pencil and highlighter, many families choose to use it digitally instead.
Simply download the PDF and open it in a note-taking app that allows writing and highlighting, such as Notability, Goodnotes, Kami, or other PDF annotation apps. Your child can read passages, highlight important information, and write responses directly on the screen.
Answer keys are accessed through convenient QR codes, so you can easily view them on a separate device while your child works through the tasks.
Whether you print the workbook or use it digitally, your child will have access to the same activities, passages, and answer keys.

Should I buy my child's current grade or next grade?
Which grade level should I choose?
During the school year, I generally recommend choosing your child's current grade level. These workbooks are designed to reinforce and strengthen the skills students are expected to master at that grade.
If your child is struggling in reading, writing, or math, I recommend staying at their current grade level—even during the summer—to help fill skill gaps and build confidence before moving on.
If your child is performing well and feels confident with grade-level work, you may choose the next grade level for an added challenge.
Using the workbook during the summer? In most cases, I recommend purchasing the grade level your child will be entering in the fall. This gives them a head start on next year's skills. However, if your child struggled during the school year, I recommend choosing their current grade level instead to strengthen their foundation before moving ahead.
